Dear fellow psychologists, academics, practitioners, and citizens,
As I prepare to step into the role of President for Division 46, I find myself reflecting on the vibrant energy and impactful contributions we shared at this past year’s APA Convention in Seattle. It was an honor to witness our division’s members shine brightly on the main stage and throughout the event. Your work exemplifies the innovation and dedication that define our community.
Our division had a significant presence at the convention, offering engaging content on topics that are shaping the future of media psychology and technology. From exploring the effects of unhealthy device engagement on attachment bonds to addressing critical pain points in digital health and the evolving psychology of privacy, we had something meaningful for everyone. Sessions on leveraging AI for culturally responsive mental health care, redefining parasocial interactions, and best practices for mental health experts on YouTube further highlighted the diversity and depth of our members’ expertise.
The lively discussions at our poster sessions, the thought-provoking panels on AI and the future of psychology, and, of course, our fantastic social hour brought us together in celebration of our collective achievements and aspirations. These moments underscored the unique role Division 46 plays within APA and the broader field of psychology.
With the convention behind us and my term as President beginning on January 1, I am excited to turn my focus toward the future. The theme for the coming year, “Media Psychology and Technology: Now and for the Next Quarter Century,” could not be more timely. We stand at a pivotal moment in understanding and shaping the complex interplay between media, technology, and society. Our division is uniquely positioned to lead this conversation, offering insights, research, and practical guidance that resonate far beyond our own professional community.
As President, my commitment is not to place myself at the center of attention but rather to act as a custodian of our division’s legacy—a steward of the work, values, and aspirations of our members. Inspired by the concept of custodianship, I see my role as building the platforms where you can stand and shine, supporting your efforts to engage with peers, APA members, and the broader public.
Over the next year, my goals are clear. Operationally, we will focus on ensuring the division is sound, both financially and structurally, to sustain and amplify our impact. Socially, we aim to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment that reflects the diversity of our membership and our interdisciplinary reach. Strategically, we will prioritize engaging students and early-career psychologists, empowering them to see the immense value in contributing to and shaping the future of media psychology and technology.
I am equally committed to creating opportunities for all members to showcase their work, not just at the annual convention but throughout the year. Whether through webinars, publications, or other collaborative initiatives, I hope to spotlight the incredible expertise within our division while fostering stronger connections among us all.
The future of Division 46 depends on our collective energy, vision, and passion. Together, we can enhance our reputation, strengthen our impact, and build a community that inspires and supports its members. Your voices, your ideas, and your engagement will drive us forward, ensuring that Division 46 remains at the forefront of the issues that we face as a society for the next 25 years and beyond.
I am honored to serve as your President and look forward to working alongside you. Let’s make this a year of growth, collaboration, and transformation. Please don’t hesitate to reach out—I am here to listen, to learn, and to support you as we shape the future of our division together.
With gratitude and excitement,
Kristian A. Alomá, PhD
President-Elect, Division 46
